Business Member Spotlight on Star Tutoring Centers

Texell’s Commercial team recently assisted the owner of Star Tutoring with a loan from the Small Business Administration (SBA). Located in north Dallas, Star Tutoring helps students improve their grades and become confident, independent learners. When searching for a financial institution to navigate the loan process, owner Kabir Dhaliwal discussed how Texell’s response is what he liked most.

“I really liked the warmth that Texell exuded,” Kabir said. “They guided me through the process and wanted to help me figure out what I needed to do. Even though we had hurdles, it was as smooth as it could be and very methodical in approach.”

While attending Southern Methodist University (SMU), Kabir tutored third graders in math and was a peer coach to his classmates. He has always enjoyed helping others and guiding his peers to success. It was this background that led him to the tutoring business, and he said he was fortunate to find Star Tutoring. He said he likes the community feel, loyalty of the customers, and that it has close ties to the people around it.

Voted Best of Dallas for Education Institutions and Academic Services in the Dallas Observer for several years, Star Tutoring specializes in strengthening Executive Functioning. This approach involves improving life skills, such as planning prioritization, communication, and time management. Once students learn how to gain control of these skills, they become empowered to succeed in all areas of their lives.

Star Tutoring is open to all grade levels with a focus on helping students in the foundational years of their lives. The center has 25 to 30 employees, which includes 22 part-time tutors. In one-on-one tutoring sessions called Star Sessions, tutors provide organization to learning while also covering different subject matters. Kabir talked about how tutors develop a strong repertoire with their students because of the one-on-one approach.

“I’ve seen students run in and hug their tutor,” Kabir said. “They have such great close bonds, and it’s really nice to see that.”

Although most of the sessions are held at the center, Star Tutoring also offers online sessions to stay flexible. Kabir hopes to expand Star Tutoring to other locations in Dallas-Ft. Worth and possibly other areas in Texas.
