Business Spotlight on DexaFit

With a background in kinesiology and an interest in improving the health of others, Michael Etheridge was inspired to open DexaFit. Located in Round Rock, TX, DexaFit offers DEXA scans that give insight into skeletal health, muscle mass, body fat, and visceral fat.

“Originally the DEXA scan was made for measuring bone health,” said Michael. “But then they realized it showed the entire body composition.” DEXA scans provide a comprehensive look into subcutaneous fat, visceral fat percentage, muscle mass percentage, as well as bone density. The scan takes only a few minutes and the test results are shared immediately. The detailed, in-depth report is used to customize wellness strategies and gives an evaluation of potential disease risks, like heart disease and diabetes.

“Texell was kind enough to give me a loan,” Michael said. He visited Texell’s Georgetown branch and, with help from Business Officer Andy Bush, he secured an SBA loan to fund his business. After receiving the loan in October 2024, he built the business to offer RMR metabolic tests and VO2 max fitness tests along with DEXA scans. RMR, or resting metabolic rate, tests caloric output while resting, while VO2 tests measure maximal oxygen consumption during intense exercise.

RMR accounts for 70% of the Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), and knowing this rate is essential for determining optimal daily caloric intake. Whether the goal is losing weight, building muscle, or maintaining your current weight, this number is the foundation of a nutrition and fitness plan.

“For athletes who want to maximize their energy potential, they can measure their VO2 Max and know exactly their energy output,” Michael said. This information is crucial for anyone focused on Zone 2 training, which is sustained, moderately intense training. The VO2 test helps maximize fat burning potential, endurance, and metabolic rate. Using detailed health metrics, the test helps tailor workouts and optimize training techniques.
