Business Spotlight on The Willow School
Based on the Montessori approach to learning, The Willow School opened in Temple in May 2024 with a focus on early child development, critical thinking, and practical life skills . Co-owners Taylore Oldfield-Jackson and Kyah Spence first became friends as neighbors and bonded over their love for their children. After planning for a couple years, they decided it was time to make their dream a reality. They worked with an SBA advisor, and then reached out to Texell to inquire about a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan.
“We wanted to create a place that’s safe for kids but also a good place for our staff,” said Director & Owner Taylore. “I feel like a lot of childcare employees don’t get the credit they deserve. We wanted this to be a family place where the staff can bring their children and where our staff can also grow as educators.”
After finding the perfect space for the school, Texell’s Commercial team helped Kyah and Taylore with a loan to purchase the building and to fund construction. Although they loved the old space that was originally a church, they needed to make improvements.
“We loved the facility but needed to bring it up to our standards and make it safe for kids,” said Taylore. “Besides building each classroom, we also needed to invest in the Montessori materials.” Teaching materials are made of wood or other natural materials, not plastic. The only technology used is for parents to check their children in and out each day.
The school teaches children ages six weeks to six years old in three classrooms for the infant, toddler, and primary programs. Learning is self-directed, and the curriculum includes practical life exercises, hands-on sensory activities, cultural studies, language, math, and outdoor exploration.
Founded by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, this approach to learning encourages children to explore, create, and learn at their own pace. Most of the staff members are Montessori-certified, and the school is a member of the American Montessori Society. Children are encouraged to explore the world around them with an inquisitive mind.
“I wanted my son to go to a Montessori school because it’s such a good learning environment,” said Kyah. Taylore and Kyah discussed how the children choose the activities and clean up after themselves.
“The kids go through a process of learning how to become little people and leaders,” said Taylore. “It’s great getting them as babies because they get used to the environment, and we transition them to the toddler classroom when they’re ready.” The Willow School is at 1911 W. Ave. H in Temple, TX 76504. To learn more about the school and educators, visit thewillowschooltx.com or call 817.372.8037.
